Details

Sinemet is a unique combination of Carbidopa and Levodopa. This medicine is helpful for treating the symptoms of Parkinson's disease or Parkinson-like signs (for example, stiffness, shakiness, trouble while moving). Parkinson's disease is considered to be caused by insufficient amounts of a naturally occurring chemical (dopamine) in the brain. Levodopa converts to dopamine in the brain, aids in controlling the movement. Carbidopa stops the breakdown of Levodopa in the bloodstream so that more Levodopa can enter the brain.

How to use Sinemet?

Take Sinemet by mouth with or without meals generally three to four times in a day. Consumption of this drug with meals may help in reducing the nauseating sensation. It is best to avoid a high-protein diet (it lowers the amount of Levodopa that your body consumes) during treatment. Split your dose of this drug by as many hours as feasible from iron supplements or products rich in iron (for example, multivitamins with minerals) you may consume. Iron can decrease the amount of this medicine absorbed by the body. The dosage of Sinemet depends upon your medical condition and response to treatment.

What happens in case of missed dose?

If you miss a dose of this combination medicine, you are suggested to consume it as soon as possible. If it is nearly the time for your subsequent dose, you may skip your missed dose and revert to your regular dosing plan. Do not take double doses at once.

What to do in case of overdose?

If you accidentally consumed an overdose of Sinemet, you must contact your nearby emergency department without delay.

What are the possible side effects associated with the use of Sinemet?

The common side effects that may arise due to this medication may include abnormal dreams; dizziness; mental, mood, or behavior changes; drowsiness; constipation; headache; vomiting; nausea; dry mouth and/or trouble sleeping.

What all important points should be kept in mind about Sinemet?

  • If you are suffering from any heart or blood vessel troubles (heart attack, arrhythmias, angina), then avoid the use of Sinemet in that case.
  • Avoid giving this combination of Carbidopa and Levodopa to a pregnant female or a nursing mother.
  • Sinemet may result in a change in the results of tests for urine ketones or urine glucose levels. Ask your physician before you modify your diet or the dose of your diabetes medication.
